FAQ
Is Guerrilla Drum Making for you? Chances are that it is. Here are some of the most common questions about taking the leap into drum making:
Do I need a workshop in order to build my own drums?
No. Guerrilla drum makers can build a drum set anywhere that allows enough space for a table or working area. However, sanding and shooting lacquer aerosols and paints should never be done in an enclosed area that doesn’t get proper ventilation. We’re talking about hazardous fumes here…. so use your judgment and be sure to wear the proper respirator.
Will the video show every possible drum finish out there?
No….that’s impossible! Every drum in the video is finished differently from the raw drum shells to the end, which will give you a plethora of knowledge that can be expanded on to create your own unique visions. The five different drum finishes shown are: a collage finish, black stain with a satin finish over a maple shell, scarlet red stain and high gloss lacquer over a birdseye veneer, sunburst fade with aerosol cans, and a striped laminate (wrap). Although no finishing is needed for the sixth drum, the last chapter deals with simple rules and guides to working with acrylic drums. Do I need to be a wood worker in order to build my own drums?
Nope. Taking the time to double check all your measurements, testing out finishes and drilling on scrap pieces of wood, and working smart are examples of some of the steps needed in order to produce a great looking drum set. You DO NOT need to be a professional! Likewise…researching different drum shell options, ply configurations, and bearing edge cuts will help attain the tone that you want. All you need for that is internet access or a phone.
Is drum building hard?
Only as hard as you make it. If you have no experience with any kind of finishing or woodworking, I suggest starting simple and working your way up. An exotic veneer with a stripe of abalone down the middle isn’t exactly in your field…..yet!
How, and where do I order drum shells and drum hardware?
Check the HELPFUL LINKS section for a complete list of companies that sell drum shells, drum hardware, drum wrap (laminates), veneer, and more. All ordering can be done online, but it may be more beneficial to speak directly with someone when ordering items such as drum shells with specific bearing edge cuts, laminate cuts (as stripes or single pieces), and veneer.
How much money will I save by building my own drums?
The endless possibilities of finishing and shell options makes this question hard to give and exact answer. The good news: there can be dramatic savings over a kit ordered from a custom or corporate drum company (anywhere from hundreds to thousands).
